The common suggestion is to use DKII.exe to play singleplayer and DKII-DX for multiplayer games, or depending on which patch version you prefer. Games saved with different versions are not compatible, it will not load correctly if you load a game saved with 1.7 DKII-DX.exe with 1.5 DKII.exe and vice versa.
